Volunteering at school

Helping out at school is a great way to get involved in your child’s education as well as get to know the staff and other parents and carers.

Get involved

Volunteers are the school's greatest resource, and research shows that children benefit when their parents or carers are actively involved in their education and school life. They help in a wide range of activities from band, sport activities, uniform shop, to home readers and other class-based activities.

Please remember – each time you are visiting the school as a volunteer, you should come to the office to sign the visitors' book, and collect a visitors' badge, which you must wear.

Just come along to a meeting or contact one of the Padstow Heights Public School parents and citizens' association (P&C) executive. We're always looking for new parents or carers to get involved and would love to hear from you.

What are the regular events you run every year?

  • term 1 disco
  • cake stalls - each term
  • mother's day stall
  • father's day breakfast
  • open day/grandparents' day (school led)
  • carols night (term 4 - held every alternate year)

There are so many ways you can help:

  • come to a meeting
  • volunteer at the uniform shop
  • volunteer at an event
  • run a fundraising event
  • volunteer for a committee (such as fundraising, band)
  • lend your technical skills (we need ad hoc help with IT, website maintenance, graphic design, organisation, manual labour – all sorts of things – just ask and we'll put your skills to use somehow!)

You may not wish to become a member of the P&C, but you may still have some special skills and wish to help out from time to time as a volunteer. Please help us to contact you when we need help by registering as a volunteer with us. Registration for events also ensures that you come under our P&C insurance when you volunteer with us.

What are the benefits for my family and I?

By being involved you will get a closer connection with your child's education through:

  • Direct access to the principal and other members of staff.
  • Information and explanations about what's happening in the school and what's coming up in the future.
  • The chance to vote on how fundraising money is spent, what the school uniform looks like, and other concerns.
  • Having your say about issues of concern and school policies.

With more input from parents, we receive better and varied ideas coming through to benefit the school and your child! Plus, children just love seeing mum or dad getting involved at their school! It makes them feel more secure and excited about school.
